You Can Rest Assured, with Certified Organic
Our farm and herd, also our dairy support land, are all certified organic and regularly audited through Biogro NZ. When a farm is Certified Organic, it is not just a label. Our entire farming (and personal) ethos is based around what it means to be organic and as natural as possible. How We Farm Organically
Pasture and Soil
Our cows are free ranging on a mixed sward pasture 24/7/365. When planting the untreated seed, we follow regenerative practices such as a no till approach - this keeps the carbon sequestered in the soil and does not upset the very important microbiology under the soil, in turn increasing the organic matter. We also regenerate pastures by resting some paddocks, leaving grass to grow and seed drop, reseeding the pasture naturally. As organic dairy farmers we are committed to ensuring healthy soils as healthy soils means healthy animals producing healthy, nutritious milk. We never use artificial chemical fertilisers, super phosphates or artificial nitrogen, such as urea. We soil test for both nutrient levels and soil biology and we only fertilise with what the soil requires, we use natural products such as lime, fish and seaweed fertiliser plus liquid humates. We never use any 'icides' - herbicides or pesticides. We noticed a colony of dung beetles had naturally migrated to our farm a few years ago and have made it their home. Dung beetles only stay around if they are in a healthy habitat. During times of the year when grass growth slows, our cows are supplemented with hay and baleage, which is all made on our organically certified farm and our organically certified farm support block (where we live) in the summer months. Feed and minerals (when required) are all organically certified and GMO-free/GE free. We have never fed Palm Kernal Expeller (that is not allowed on an organic farm). Our calves are fed their mother's colostrum for a week and then they are reared on fresh cows milk. Calves are kept warm and dry inside when they are small where they always have access to fresh water and high quality hay and as much milk as they like. Once they are old enough to venture outside onto the grass, they continue to be reared on cows milk for a natural period of time (around 9 months). We do not send any bobby calves - our calves either grow up on our farm to join the milking herd when they are older, we raise some calves for organic beef and we have a select few beef breeders who purchase some of our young calves to rear to fully grown on their farms.
Water
As we are a food producer, our dairy farm is reliant on a clean water supply. To maintain organic certification, we have a healthy, safe water supply from a deep bore which is regularly tested. Our water is completely natural and is free of chlorine and fluoride. We also use a Swiss made frequency device, simply wrapped around the outside of a water pipe, called an Aquakat
HOME - Aquakat New Zealand - our farm water is as tasty as spring water. Our cows love the taste and Farmer Greg has been known to drink directly out of the cowshed hose on a hot summer's day, he says it is the best water ever!
We are committed to improving the environment and we regularly plant native trees around the farm. Like all dairy farms in New Zealand our waterways are fenced.
Health and Breeding
We breed for strong, healthy animals. Many of our cows are still milking at 14 and 15 years old and we find that their daughters and granddaughters are exceptionally healthy (the NZ average cow age is only 4). We do not use any genetic modification in breeding, the traits that we breed for are through natural genetics. We follow strict animal health guidelines and have an animal health and welfare plan, updated annually with our local vets. We use treatments such as herbal tinctures and homeopathy, keeping our cows healthy with a strong natural immune system and preventative measures such as good feeding with a selection of herbs and weeds to browse, growing in the biologically healthy paddocks, a healthy mineral balance and no hurry or stress. Our free range system from pasture to milking allows the cow to live as naturally as possible, without intervention from the farmer. She is able to milk herself up to three times over 24 hours. She may also choose just to milk once a day or twice a day. There is no farmer, motorbike or dog barking at her to hurry to the cowshed at certain times, she chooses when she leaves the paddock and walks at her own pace. Our cows do not receive any hormones or growth promoting substances. Our computer system gives us updates on the health and wellbeing of every cow, each time she milks as well as Farmer Greg's animal husbandry knowledge of knowing when a cow is unwell.
