Tell me more about A2 Milk...
Our certified organic, A2 milk is a nutrient-dense superfood. It is an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, B vitamins, Vitamin D, iodine, potassium, healthy fats, amino acids, energy (from lactose) and protein.
There are two types of protein found in milk – whey and casein – both of which are extremely efficient at helping our bodies absorb amino acids, build and repair muscle and more.
Around 30% of cows milk is made up of a protein called beta-casein. Beta-casein may be present in cow’s milk as A1 or A2. The type of beta casein produced is determined by the genes of the individual cow.
Historically, cows milk only had the A2 beta-casein protein present (the same protein that is easily digested by humans as it is also the same primary protein as found in human mother's milk). At some point in time, scientists estimate around 8000 years ago, a genetic mutation occurred naturally in European cows throwing the A1 beta-casein protein variant. Today, most cows milk sold in the supermarket is a mix of A1 and A2. Unfortunately, the A1 beta-casein can be difficult for humans to digest and is linked to inflammation, gut discomfort, skin irritation and many other health issues.
The difference between the A1 and A2 types of beta casein effects how the protein is broken down by the body during digestion. When digested, the A1
protein produces beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7). The A2 protein produces little or none.
BCM-7 is a protein fragment that has been extensively studied and has been reported to interact with cells around the body. Some studies have shown that BCM-7 may increase inflammation of the gut and reduce the ability of the body to digest lactose (a type of sugar
also found in milk), leading to lactose intolerance symptoms in some people.
We may experience fewer lactose intolerance symptoms from drinking A2 milk compared to conventional milk which contains the A1 protein.
What are the benefits of choosing A2 milk? A2 milk is often recommended for toddlers and young children, as their digestive systems are still developing and may be more sensitive to A1 milk due to the BCM-7 peptide. For older people, studies suggest that A2 milk may improve cognitive function, including memory and self-care abilities. For all of us, no matter our age, A2 milk has benefits. When A1 protein is digested in the small intestine, it produces a peptide BCM-7 which then passes into the blood. Studies have linked BCM-7 to stomach discomfort and symptoms similar to those experienced by people with lactose intolerance. For many people, A2 protein is well tolerated with no gut discomfort. The only way to know if a cow is A1/A1, A1/A2 or A2/A2 is to have each cow tested. Our healthy cows who supply The Milk Barn have been tested A2/A2, so you can be assured that the milk you drink is A2/A2 (also known as A1 Protein Free.)
We would love to know if you feel a difference with our milk!
